Umami is otherwise known as the “fifth” flavor of basic tastes — the other four being sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. Derived from the Japanese word umami, meaning “delicious,” umami (pronounced oo-MAH-mee) is described as a savory, brothy, rich or meaty taste sensation. It’s a complex and delicious flavor that has the ability to make any recipe shine!
